I create visual narratives that are based on metaphor and open to interpretation. I develop them through abstract landscapes, enigmatic objects and characters that are expressive yet soft and tender – exploring mood and emotion, primarily conveyed through colour, and supported by expressive line and texture.
I use varied approaches, including recording the stream of consciousness, weaving associations, creating a set of rules (method), developing a game, in order to leave the narrative open-ended, leaving clues for the viewer to enter and start unlocking their own story. What I pursue is conceiving poetic contexts which the spectator can occupy through emotion and reflection.
The themes I explore through my visual work are the notion and perception of time; creation and perception of a work of art; visual language and script; exploring the potential of a medium I am working with. I am often inspired by or refer to literature to explore these themes which in my pieces tend to overlap and intertwine.
I work in various media including painting in ink & acrylic, photography, digital image making, animation, and small objects in space. While my communication design background motivates me to inquire into creation and perception of a work of art, the design skills and experience enable me to move seamlessly between different media and allow me to choose the medium according to the specifics of a narrative I am creating. I further explore the media by “translating” from one medium to another, as well as experimenting with the materials and tools in combining analogue and digital approaches.
It is an endless curiosity that drives me to create – to experiment, to look for a solution or explanation, to explore in depth, and most of all to search for hidden connections. What I wish to communicate through my art is a comforting notion that we can always dig deeper for hidden meaning, that everything in life is somehow interconnected and makes sense in a human way.

“Poetry is an awareness of the world, a particular way of relating to reality.”

BIO
Born in 1978 in Ljubljana, Živa Moškrič grew up on the outskirts of her hometown. Her extended family house was surrounded by meadows and forests on the outside and full of books on the inside. While nature inspired her senses with its colours and changing seasons, the stories and poetry from her grandfather’s home library fuelled her imagination.
She studied design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Universität Essen, Germany. She has an MA in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London, UK.
Throughout her career as a designer she worked on projects ranging from print design and digital advertising to animation and innovation, for clients including notable UK & global brands and Slovenian cultural institutions.
Alongside her design work she has continuously explored the line between art and design through a range of media. Her projects include animated shorts and videos, illustration, art objects and graphic art prints. She developed her own artistic method for creating visual narratives, and for translating music into visuals. Her artistic approach is grounded both in her extensive design expertise as well as complementary learning through courses and workshops in moving image, illustration and fine art.
Currently her main focus is on her illustration and art practice.
Her work has been exhibited and screened internationally, including at international animated film festivals Animafest, Zagreb and Animateka, Ljubljana; International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women, Ljubljana; Type Directors’ Club, New York; International Poster Biennial, Warsaw; European Ways of Life, Paris; Espacio de las Artes, Tenerife and Mala Galerija – Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana.
Her second solo exhibition, The Colour of Time (Barva časa) is on view at Ars Medica Gallery in Groznjan, Croatia, until October 19th.
She lives and works in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
